SACRAMENTO COUNTY   Sacramento, with a population of over 1 million people and 2,701 reported HIV/AIDS cases and is the state's capital. Education and Prevention is conducted through five community based organizations, in addition to Sacramento County HIV/CD Prevention Program staff. The target populations include men having sex with men, injection and non-injection, substance users, high-risk women of color, and high risk youth. Education is provided through street based outreach and site specific education activities (i.e. multi-session risk reduction workshops, education support groups, individual level risk reduction counseling, social marketing activities, educational events).

Program Description:
Prevention and education activities are conducted through 6 community based organizations in addition to Sacramento County HIV/Communicable Disease Prevention staff. The target populations include men who have sex with men, substance users, high-risk women of child bearing age, pregnant women, high risk youth, communities of color, faith communities and HIV positive people. Education is conducted in venues including homeless shelters, clubs/bars, public sex environments, community events,  community-based agencies, barbershops and other street outreach locations. A variety of education and prevention strategies are used to serve these populations including multiple-sessions workshops, Internet education, street outreach, social marketing and media activities, condom distribution and HIV testing. Sacramento County staff coordinate and monitor these activities as well as provide trainings and technical assistance to providers and community members.
