Located along the Pacific coast north of San Francisco, Sonoma County is a mixed rural/suburban county, encompassing 1,579 square miles. Sonoma County is home to 443,7000 people (1999 estimate), with almost 285,300 persons or about 65% residing within the boundaries of the nine incorporated cities located primarily along the Highway 101 corridor. However, with more than 151,800 persons (35%) residing in the unincorporated areas, it also has one of the largest rural populations among counties in California. Sonoma County has the 6th highest AIDS incidence rate among all California counties. As of November 2007, Sonoma County had recorded 1,964 AIDS cases and 233 reported cases of HIV by name.
